Candidate Counteroffers: How to Keep Your Preferred Hire Engaged

You have sent the offer and started planning their first day. Then the candidate calls to say their current employer has offered them more to stay.

Before responding, take a breath and revisit what drew them to your role. That conversation gives you a better starting point than immediately adjusting the salary.

Why counteroffers happen

A counteroffer is often an attempt by the current employer to keep a valued person. It may include more money, a title change, flexible working or promises of future development. In the moment, it can make a candidate question whether moving is the right decision.

Ask the candidate how the counteroffer addresses their original reasons for moving. If they wanted more responsibility, better support or a manageable workload, explore what has actually changed. Give them space to weigh up both opportunities without pressuring them for an immediate answer.

Keep communication open

A candidate should never feel rushed into a decision. Give them space to consider their options, but stay in touch. Revisit the conversations you had about the new role, including the responsibilities, team, development opportunity and long-term potential.

Be honest about the opportunity, including the work that still needs doing. Explain why you created the role, what the person will own and who will support them. A candidate can make a more confident decision when they understand the day-to-day reality.

Make the pre-start experience positive

The period between offer acceptance and the first day is a chance to build confidence. A simple welcome message, an introduction to the team, clear information about the first week and prompt answers to practical questions can all help the person feel certain about their decision.

Candidates want to know they are joining a business that is prepared for them. Small details matter because they show that the company values the hire and has thought about their arrival.

Kamro supports employers throughout the recruitment journey, including the time between offer acceptance and start date. We help keep candidates engaged, communicate clearly and make sure both sides enter the new relationship with the right expectations. That support can be especially valuable when a preferred candidate is weighing up a counteroffer.
