Should We Reopen a Vacancy If None of the Candidates Feel Right?
Reopening a vacancy can be the right decision. Before you advertise again, work out why the first search fell short. Repeating the same campaign without changing anything gives you little reason to expect a different shortlist.
Was the problem with the applicants or the expectations?
Start with the work the new employee actually needs to do. Separate the requirements needed from day one from the things a capable person could learn after joining.
For example, someone may need a particular technical qualification immediately, while familiarity with your internal reporting system could be taught. Treating both as equally important can rule out people who could do the job well.
Ask each interviewer to explain their concerns using evidence. “They could not explain how they handled a similar project” is useful. “They did not quite feel right” needs further discussion before it becomes a rejection reason.
Check what the advert promised
Compare the role described in the advert with the role discussed at interview. Did candidates discover additional travel, supervisory responsibilities or a different working pattern halfway through the process?
If so, the campaign may have attracted people for a version of the job you are not actually offering.
Review the salary, location and essential experience together. A highly specific brief with little flexibility deserves an honest conversation about whether the overall offer is realistic for the people you want to reach.
Decide what to change before going live
Write down the changes you will make. These could include a clearer job title, a more accurate description of responsibilities or a different approach to finding candidates.
Also look at the route to market. If you relied entirely on incoming applications, another advert may miss the same people again. A sourcing-led campaign creates an opportunity to approach relevant candidates directly and establish whether they are interested.
Keep a short record of why the previous applicants were unsuitable. This gives everyone involved a clearer screening brief and reduces the chance of repeating the same conversations.
How Kamro can help you restart the search
Kamro runs fixed-fee hiring campaigns that include active sourcing, screening and candidate validation. The starting point is understanding the role and the hiring challenge, rather than simply collecting another batch of CVs.
If your first shortlist has left you uncertain, book a 15-minute Hiring Check. Bring the advert, your interview feedback and the requirements you cannot compromise on. Those details provide a useful basis for deciding what the next campaign needs to do differently.
